As part of its functional needs, the third place Volumes asked Tom VINCENT to design a reception desk fabricated in situ, using the resources and tools available in its own FabLab. The challenge: to create functional, elegant and self-produced furniture, perfectly integrated into a narrow circulation space.
The desk design meets a dual requirement: space economy and versatility. In a cramped corridor, it combines a reception surface, storage modules for daily deliveries, and a display system for the venue's stakeholders. The reception station, slightly recessed and angled, allows for rational use of space while ensuring comfort and visibility for the host.
Made of birch plywood, the furniture combines smooth surfaces with an apparent structure of through-battens, ensuring both stability and formal legibility. Mostly machined on a CNC router, the project illustrates a local and pragmatic design approach, where the precision of the assemblies allows for a fluid insertion into the existing architecture.
